Introduction to the College of Life Sciences

The College of Life Sciences in Nankai University was founded in 1993 and presently consists of 5 departments, 2 institutes, and 2 centers:

1. Department of Microbiology
2. Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
3. Department of Genetics and Cell Biology
4. Department of Plant Biology and Ecology
5. Department of Zoology and Developmental Biology
6. Institute of Molecular Biology
7. Institute of Entomology
8. TEDA Functional Genomics Research Center
9. Experimental Center for Biology Teaching.

The college occupies three buildings with a construction area of 15,000 square meters. The basic facilities include a central laboratory, library, stock room, computer room, and a graph room, providing sounding services for teaching and research.

There are 172 faculty and staff members in the College of Life Sciences. One of them is entitled Academician of CAS, Fourteen of them is entitled Yangtze River Professor and National Outstanding Youth Foundation, Fifteen have gained support from the Ministry of Education Cross-century Talents Foundation, three are honored professorships of Tianjin, and teelve have the special professor titles of Nankai University. There are also some visiting professors from prestigious universities all over the world .

The college possesses a National Training Base in Life Sciences and Technology, and a National Training Base in Insect Systematics, a Key Laboratory of Bioactive Materials, a Key Laboratory of Functional Genomics of Microorganism. and the TEDA Functional Genomics Research Center, The College has been authorized to confer Ph. D. and M. S. degrees in all disciplines, and is a licensed postdoctoral research center in biology.

The college provides an excellent place and intelligent input in education. Currently, there are approximately 509 undergraduate students. About 742 graduate students are pursuing their M.S. or Ph.D. degrees in the college. The college also offers preparatory courses for more than 300 M.S. candidates from other five medical universities. Today more than 190 courses are offered to undergraduate and graduate students. The college has earned four national teaching awards and ten provincial and/or ministerial teaching awards.

The College of Life Sciences has gradually established its own feature in scientific research. Since 2009, the college has undertaken 372 projects of various resources, with the research funding of 260 million yuan in RMB, including the National "973" Key Fundamental Research Projects, “863” National High Tech Research and Development Projects, as well as the National Natural Science Foundation of China and other provincial or ministerial projects. Three projects have won the national prize and eleven have awarded with provincial or ministerial prize.

In order to widen the research areas and keep up with the advances in life sciences, the college has established academic collaborations and intercommunications with many universities and institutions, such as those in USA, Canada, Japan, Europe and Australia. Many famous scholars and excellent researchers are invited each year. Meantime, many of our research groups attended the international conferences. We have also hosted several international conferences, such as International Academic Intercommunion Conference between Canada and China, and participated in many international projects such as American “NIH”, AIDS workshops.

In recent years, the College of Life Sciences has attracted outstanding professors, acquired new state-of-the-art instrumentation, expanded the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, and increased the number of students. Our goal is to be on the cutting-edge of life science research and education in China, and be recognized world wide in the near future.
