多年来一直系统地进行细菌分子进化、致病机理、环境适应机制以及致病菌分子检测技术的研究，取得了一系列具有国际前沿水平的创新成果，获得国际同行高度评价。
已累计在Nature、PNAS、Nature Communications、Genome Biology等期刊发表SCI论文243篇，其中91篇为通讯作者（含共同通讯22篇），21篇为第一作者；正面他引总计5113次，单篇最高他引541次，H因子40。在Elsevier公布的 2014、2015、2016年“中国高被引学者榜单”中，连续三年在“生化、遗传和分子生物学”领域排名第十。先后主持“艾滋病与病毒性肝炎传染病防治”国家科技重大专项、“863”项目和“国家自然科学基金重点项目”等重大科研项目20余项。成果获2007年“天津市自然科学一等奖”和“教育部高等学校十大科技进展奖”。
